I would have to say that today was almost a normal day, believe it or not.
Woke up late like I always do in the States and was really worried that Stephanie would be waiting for me. Nope. Haha. Finally called her, and she only woke up when I called.
It was the day of reckoning – the day we figured out which classes we were put in. Luckily, for Stephanie, Alee, and I, everything went according to plan.
I placed in level 7 of 7, and on the list outside the door, it seemed that the majority of the people in my class had at least two last names (a sign they are from a Spanish country). I had a damn near panic attack, as Mom and Sean found out from the text I sent them. But once I got into class, all was well. Amazing, actually.
There is a girl from Brazil, a girl who is Dominican but from Boston, an older Hispanic man from Boston, a guy my age from Thailand, an older man from France, a girl my age from Oregon, and the last guy is my age, but he was born in France, lives in Switzerland, and considers himself Spanish because his parents are from Spain. Pretty crazy, if you ask me.
Class went really well, and I’m basically in love with my Spanish professor…kinda like I have been with every Spanish prof I’ve ever had J She’s so cool. Very easy to understand, very wiling to help, and so fun and outgoing. It really is a wonderful class.
We get a break at 11:30, so I met up with Stephanie, and we went over to a café across the street from the school called “favorit.” Had Spanish tortillas, which I think I’ve explained before, but Stephanie and I pinned down that when warm, they taste like scalloped potatoes. SO good. And they were only 1 euro!
Went back to class and then on to Zemke’s class, which was pretty chill, too. It’s all about Spanish poetry. And while difficult, I think it’ll be awesome.
Berta made pasta for lunch, and it was delicious! I think she has a grip on what American girls like because she’s hosted 4 before me J But lunch was great and lots of fun.
Luis, the dad, left, and I visited with Berta for awhile at the table. Then I brought them the photo album with pictures of my hometown and state, the Statue of Liberty Russell Stover chocolates, and Silly Putty, a puzzle, and Cookie Dough Bites for Claudia. She loved the Silly Putty and had never seen anything like it before.
Then I visited Claudia in her room for a little bit, and she is just so darn cute. I asked her what she named her fish, and one was “flor” (flower in English), and she told me the other didn’t really have a name because she changes it all the time. I told her that my sister had a room that was the same color has hers – purple! Then she showed me her zebra pajamas, and I couldn’t help but laugh. I told her more about Wen and her Zebra rug and stuffed animals and collection. She has drawings of Shrek and Hannah Montana hung on her wall. So cute!!
I asked her if she took siesta, and she said, “No. Never!” But then I explained to her that I wanted to play with her but I am old and need a siesta.
After siesta, we went back to the Centro Commerical and got Alee a SIM card for her phone, did a little shopping at H & M (sandals and a jacket for 20 euro), and just looked around. Got lost like yesterday, but it was great fun. Went through the biggest park in the city and saw a peacock!
Finally ended up at a Chocolateria and had churros y chocolate. They’re basically fried dough with sugar that you dip in hot chocolate. YUM! Sat and talked for a long time, then finally parted ways.
Was planning on doing homework but got distracted by actually having the internet!!! It was SO GREAT to talk to Sean and Mom for the little bit that we did get to talk. I miss and love you both dearly!
Unfortunately, I didn’t do my reading for Zemke’s class…whoops. So I have to catch up on that tomorrow…
