Fire and Rain

Reading other people's blog posts, I feel that my writing ability is seriously lacking...so what am I going to do? Post other people's quotes! ;) Actually, it's more of a clean-up my inbox kind of thing - I find myself inspired every morning by the quotes at the end of the A Word A Day e-mails, so I figured creating a collection of them would be the proper thing to do:

You can tell whether a man is clever by his answers. You can tell whether a
man is wise by his questions. -Naguib Mahfouz, writer (1911- )

Science is organized knowledge. Wisdom is organized life. -Immanuel Kant,
philosopher (1724-1804)

It's good to have money and the things that money can buy, but it's good,
too, to check up once in a while and make sure that you haven't lost the
things that money can't buy. -George H. Lorimer, editor (1868-1937)

The most important discoveries will provide answers to questions that we do
not yet know how to ask and will concern objects we have not yet imagined.
-John N. Bahcall, astrophysicist (1935-2005)

People who want to share their religious views with you almost never want
you to share yours with them. -Dave Barry, author and columnist (1947- )

A sneer is the weapon of the weak. -James Russell Lowell, poet, editor, and
diplomat (1819-1891)

In this age, the mere example of nonconformity, the mere refusal to bend
the knee to custom, is itself a service. -John Stuart Mill, philosopher and
economist (1806-1873)

The high minded man must care more for the truth than for what people
think. -Aristotle, philosopher (384-322 BCE)

Learning is weightless, a treasure you can always carry easily. -Chinese
Proverb

To read without reflecting is like eating without digesting. -Edmund Burke,
statesman and writer (1729-1797)

The greatest compliment that was ever paid me was when one asked me what I
thought, and attended to my answer. -Henry David Thoreau, naturalist and
author (1817-1862)

Insanity in individuals is something rare - but in groups, parties, nations
and epochs, it is the rule. -Friedrich Nietzsche, philosopher (1844-1900)

No one means all he says, and yet very few say all they mean, for words are
slippery and thought is viscous. -Henry Brooks Adams, historian (1838-1918)

The bitterest tears shed over graves are for words left unsaid and deeds
left undone. -Harriet Beecher Stowe, abolitionist and novelist (1811-1896)

An idea is not responsible for the people who believe in it. -Don Marquis,
humorist and poet (1878-1937)

Destroying species is like tearing pages out of an unread book, written in
a language humans hardly know how to read, about the place where they live.
-Holmes Rolston III, professor of philosophy (1932- )

Those quotes usually make my morning!
The next CD on my list to purchase is James Taylor. Don't know which one yet, but does that really matter? Listening to Fire and Rain for now...

Just yesterday morning they let me know you were gone
Susanne, the plans they made put an end to you
I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song
I just can't remember who to send it to

I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again

So won't look down upon me, Jesus
You've got to help me make a stand
You've just got to see me through another day
My body's aching and my time is at hand
And I won't make it any other way

I've been walking my mind to an easy time
My back turned towards the sun
Lord knows when the cold wind blows it'll turn your head around
Well, there's hours of time on the telephone line
To talk about things to come
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground

I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you one more time again

Thought I'd see you one more time again
There's just a few things coming my way this time around
Thought I'd see you, thought I'd see you
Fire and rain
